Azo Dyes: Importance and Environmental Concerns
"Azo compounds have many applications such as in : paint formulations, color photography, textiles, medicinal applications and metallochromic indicators, etc. In 2010, ca. 560,000 tons of organic pigments were produced globally and 59% was in the azo sector ; the total value of the global production was valued at more than seven billion USD.
It is estimated that the production of one ton of azo pigments uses 120-180 tons of water and in 2010, in China alone, 2.69-8.51 x10e7 tons of wastewater. The treatment of this wastewater is very costly and environmentally hazardous and toxic to aquatic life. "- Feng et al (Green Chemistry ,2019,21,1769-1776.
