Italian Master Caravaggio: Self Portrait Flesh Analysis

One of the greatest painters in human record, the troubled genius was in one altercation after another. he was probably poisoned by his paints and known to be sloppy with them in the studio.

Using "Just Color Picker" , downloadable ( and free) software, i determined about 12 flesh tones including the bruise around his eye.

Planning Human Flesh Tones/ Artwork

"Just Color Picker" is downloadable freeware which helps an artist plan various human flesh tones. Place the  cursor over various areas and get the RGB values for hue mixing.

Cellose Acetate/ Butyrate Oil-Based Paint Formulation (Developmental)

1. Commercial oil-based paint 2. Cellulose acetate/butyrate (binder) in 80% (vol) butanol :20% (+) carvone (oil of dill). and methyl ester derivative of castor oil (vehicles). Not dry to the touch after 30 minutes at 21 deg.C. The tradition of oil-based vibrant color is retained.

I am hoping this novel oil-based paint formulation will be employed by painters that prefer the oil-based paints.  The methyl ester of castor oil is sold by Caschem ( Bayonne , N.J., USA) under the tradename of" Flexrecin P-1".  It can also be prepared using traditional transesterification ( biodiesel) conditions.

NO turpentine , toluene solvents are utilized. The butanol is far less harmful (also biodegradable) for large-scale paintings than the aforementioned solvents. The cellulose acetate/ butyrate ester binder is bio-degradable in waste disposal  matters along with the castor oil derivative.

I am using bristol foundation in the image without gesso use.  For actual paintings, an undercoat of gesso should be used.

From Wikipedia:
n-Butanol or n-butyl alcohol or normal butanol is a primary alcohol with a 4-carbon structure and the chemical formula C4H9OH. Its isomers include isobutanol, 2-butanol, and tert-butanol. Butanol is one of the group of "fusel alcohols" (from the German for "bad liquor"), which have more than two carbon atoms and have significant solubility in water.[6]
n-Butanol occurs naturally as a minor product of the fermentation of sugars and other carbohydrates,[7] and is present in many foods and beverages.[8][9] It is also a permitted artificial flavorant in the United States,[10] used in butter, cream, fruit, rum, whiskey, ice cream and ices, candy, baked goods and cordials.[11] It is also used in a wide range of consumer products.[8]

Egg Tempera Caseina (Developmental Egg Yolk/ Casein Binder)

Casein (borax emulsified milk protein) was mixed with chicken egg yolk in a 1;1 volume.
Stirring lead to a stable emulsion. The binder was mixed with tempered ( wet with water) commercial watercolor. The test paint was placed on bristol foundation and dried quickly. The flow off the brush was easily controlled.

We are studying possible microbial fermentation of this paint formulation. We want to determine if the pigment prevents microbe degradation of the paint. We will post our findings.

Egg Tempera Caseina: Developmental Paint

I am mixing egg yolk, fat-free powdered milk ( casein), water and a small amount of water-based carnauba car wax. I will be posting exact amounts and creating a YouTube video soon.

The paint dries quickly and I mix the formulation with commercial watercolors.

I like the very high value for the red hue shown here on bristol.

For one  'jumbo'  chicken egg yolk, I use a teaspoon of the fat-free powdered milk.
