Acrylic/ Oil Painting Platform Preparation: Floor Tiles

I obtain one sq. foot 'Peel N' Stick' floor tiles at close-out sales. I apply two coats (four for oil painting) of gesso (or "Kilz" primer) for acrylics. I sand after each coat. I take cardboard and spray both sides with 'Loctite' adhesive (to preserve the carboard) and allow to dry. I adhere the floor tile and press.

This can be cut in sections as desired.  It is an inexpensive  platform for beginning artist and those wishing to carry out a study.

Inexpensive Gouache Paint Preparation

  • "White glue" is an aqueous dispersion of polyvinyl acetate. I have found that an inexpensive gouache paint can be made by blending finely-sieved chalk paint with the school glue. The paint increases in color value when dried, as expected with gouache. A sample of dried paint will slowly lose adherence to the paper surface as expected with gouache. Paintings with gouache can be protected by rubbing the work with 'cold wax'. Particles of chalk can be brushed off when the paint dries or left in place. A finer sieving can also be considered before use. I added a few drops of commercial Evonik dispersant , but I saw no advantage. Color value can be built up with application of successive layers with a wet brush, as usual with gouache.

The Tree: A Technical Sudy ( Oil Painting)

The platform is 5"x 5" wood. I am using 24- dried black to shade the surrounding color blending around the tree.

Oil Painting Platform Preparation: Cardboard & WaterColor Paper

A section of cardboard is varnished with 'Liquitex'. After drying, the varnished side and appropriate water color paper (smooth side) are sprayed with "Loctite" adhesive and, after waiting one minute, bonded together.

The watercolor paper is given two coats of gesso and no curling is observed. I still place the platform under some weight for 1-2 hrs before using.  It is ready for oil painting studies or small-scale permanent artwork.
