 "Rapid Set" (commercial mortar sold in the USA by Home Depot) / Sand/  Local Gray Ground Shale

1:1 :1:1      6"x 10" x 0.5"     Set in 1.0 hr at 50 deg F.

Removed from mold in 3 hrs.

Will be topcoated with grout: white latex paint in 24 hrs. (2:1).

After C.G. Jung: Fresco Secco

 

Approx. 5" x5" x1" concrete platform. A single topcoat of non-sanded grout. Aq. grout/acrylics.

Fingernails cannot scratch the dried pigment.

Acrylic/Grout Pigment Mixture Preparation/ You Tube Video

 I use this pigment matrix I developed in my Fresco Secco artwork.
i mix the finely powdered pigment matrix with water vehicle, some grout and calcium hydroxide ( slaked lime). The paint will be bound to the platform as part of calcium carbonate that forms in the presence of water .

I find this dimension attractive for my fresco secco artwork.

I mixed fast0setting concrete with powdered clay 'kitty litter'. No pozzolan ash was added to this trial.

I allowed the concrete to dry in the garage for 8 hrs at 70 deg.F or so.
I very carefully inverted the mold inches from the floor and it came out easily with no breakage.

I sprayed the mold with WD40 lubricant as a mold release agent before adding the concrete mix.

I will let it dry/ strengthen for 48 more hrs before applying a grout plaster topcoat. Artwork can then commence.


I would suggest this dimension would be good for fresco studies before scale-up.

Pozzolana Vesuviana/ Roman Concrete

Roman-Like Concrete

Slake-line ( calcium hydroxide)/ water / terracotta / crushed red brick to prepare cement.

Roman-like since the ancient Romans used pozzolona ash, pumice, slake lime to prepare their cement.

The cement is ready for application when sticking to the trowel.

Top: the cement

Bottom: drying cement on a lower layer of dried Portland cement.

I will be preparing such cement with slake lime, water, pumice and fine sand to make a mortar.

Aggregates, of course, produce cement. Top layers of grout to the dried mortar followed by 'Fresco Secco" painting.

Ca. 1940s Telephone Chair ( Left-Handed Use)

Purchased locally a ca. 1940s 'telephone chair' in excellent condition constructed from maple hardwood.  I am applying three coats of 'teakwood' stain manufactured by 'Minwax'.
  I will use the furniture ( I am left-handed) to hold an 'overhead camera' when recording technical problems for one of my 'organic chemistry' classes.

Developmental Water-Based Polyurethane Paints

Tovolazza commercial watercolors added to water-based polyurethane binder with natural nanotubular 'halloysite ' clay ( quarry in WY., USA) added.  Dries like the acrylics quickly ( keep brushes wet!) , but different appearance when dry.

Scrap wood (bare) which has a knot in the yellow region.

Re-Finished 1940s Cherry Wood Table

The finest cherry wood in the world is found around western Pennsylvania, USA.
I found this 1940s era table in a local thrift store for... $4.99 (USD).

Sanded and stained. Three more coats were applied after taking the above image.  I will topcoat with spray lacquer.

Surface is carved with dremmel tool. Water-Based developmental polyurethane paints.

Polyurethane is bio-degradable , the polyacrylics not so. Currently, the water-based polyurethanes are more expensive, but better for health and environment!
