Novel Watercolor Vehicle? Johnson's Baby Wash!

                                             Pan watercolors were used in this study. A brush is dipped in the "Johnson's Baby Wash" ( non-ionic surfactant formulation in 30% water) and applied to poset-baord. Paint flows nicely and dries quickly. The brush is cleaned in water, rubbed dry with paper and ready for next color.

 Try it!

I find such a wash is great with topcoat oils!

Reflectance Spectroscopy / Pigment/ Paint Analyses

 

Reflectance spectroscopy is a relatively inexpensive technique for analyzing pigment/ paint. dye analyses.

I am currently using the spectroscopic technique to study egg tempera paint formulations that wew are developing on our campus.

                                         I often apply watercolor (no egg tempera binder added). When dry , I then add selected pigment with binder and work quickly to blend before it dries.

An Illustration for the following story:

"First, we tried cleaning the polluted river by hand. Every other day someone would kayak out to the habitat to remove garbage, but that was not enough. Trash appeared at random times and in large quantities. Sometimes we would remove every piece of trash in the morning and by the afternoon more had reappeared. Thus, the 'Trashbot' was created in our image and likeness. It swims daily in the river and collects the trash. The Trashbot is saddened by the mess, but enjoys having a purpose in life."

Distorted Chinese Opera Mask Egg Tempera on Drywall

 

                                       Commercial watercolor blended with egg tempera binder . A section of 'drywall' being used as platform with no gesso undercoat. About 7-10 cotas of paint will be required. Note the satin-like red hue with tempera medium.  Acrylic gesso cannot be used with egg tempera paints- it will not bind! Use rabbit glue-based gesso!

 An approx. 30 minute video outlining our research into azo dye/ pigment production via 'grind methodology' and conversion into water-based gouache and casein ("milk") paint formulations.

We are developing a 'chemistry of art' lecture/ lab course as an elective for our undergraduate students.
