Alkyd Artists Paints (Art & Chemistry)



Alkyd resin is synthesized from plant and vegetable oils, like linseed or soya oil, that is modified (oil-modified alkyd resin) for use in artist’s oil paints, mediums and grounds. I convert linseed oil (tung oil, crambe oil, walnut oil, etc with some castor oil additive) , for example, into the mono-glyceride derivative with glycerol, followed by reaction with phthalic anhydride.When it is dry alkyd is tough, flexible and resistant to solvents. The main advantage of alkyd is in the speed at which alkyd resin dries. Alkyd oil paints or oil paints with added alkyd mediums will usually be touch-dry in 24 hours, if painted in a normal thin film. They become tacky within a few hours so brushstrokes can be added without disturbing the earlier paint.

Developmental Oil/Synthetic Petrolatum Paint

A previous post described the synthetic petrolatum (most components are renewables) and the lighting presents the petrolatum as a more + chroma than in actuality.
Swatches of a commercial oil-based blue paint , 1:1, with the petrolatum on bristol. Undercoat is an oil pastel.

Developmental Paint: Oil-Based Paint /Synthetic Petrolatum

The synthetic petrolatum ( petroleum jelly) contains coconut oil, beeswax, lanolin, silicone grease linseed and castor oil. I will upload the procedure when optimized.

A 1:1 ratio of commercial oil-based paint is mixed with the synthetic petrolatum. It flows off the brush beautifully. The undercoat is a developmental oil pastel on bristol foundation.

Drying time (if it dries!) is being determined.

eBay sellers (China) sell these molds for about $12.00 (USD postpaid to USA).
Efficient mold for making four (4) oil pastels per run. About 7" length.

I place the cooled oil pastel cylinders in US quarter or nickel paper rolls for subsequent use in painting.
